How to Choose the Right Planter for Your Plants
The right pot matters more than you think
A planter isn’t just decoration — the right size, material, and drainage directly affect how well your plant grows. Here’s how to choose pots that keep plants healthy.
Get the size right
Choose a pot suited to the plant’s root system — roughly an inch or two wider than the current root ball. Too small restricts growth; far too big holds excess water around the roots. Size up gradually as the plant grows.
Always check for drainage
This is non-negotiable: a planter needs drainage holes so excess water can escape. Without them, roots sit in water and rot. If you love a pot with no holes, use it as a decorative outer cover (cachepot) with a draining pot inside.
Choose the material
- Terracotta/clay: breathable and great for roots, but dries out faster and can crack.
- Ceramic (glazed): beautiful and holds moisture well; heavier.
- Plastic: light, affordable, retains moisture — choose UV-stable for outdoors.
- Metal: stylish and sturdy, but can heat up in the sun.
Indoor or outdoor?
For outdoor pots in India’s strong sun, choose UV-resistant, weatherproof materials that won’t fade or crack. Indoor pots can prioritise looks, but still need drainage and a saucer.
Mind the weight
On balconies and terraces with weight limits, lighter plastic or fibre pots are easier to move and safer. Large ceramic pots are heavy once filled with soil.
Don’t forget a saucer
A saucer under the pot catches draining water and protects floors and furniture — just empty it so the plant doesn’t sit in water.
